Max Arfsten to Middlesbrough: Boro's American Pipeline Grows

As of this writing, the deal is not official, but it looks like it is going to happen. What deal, you may ask? Well, I’m talking about Max Arfsten to Middlesbrough. That’s right, yet another player who has starred for the Columbus Crew from Major League Soccer is heading to Middlesbrough. It has been reported that Arfsten is on the move to Middlesbrough for a fee of $7.5 million (£5.6 million), which includes add-ons.
Arfsten currently has 21 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team, a rapid international rise that culminated in a roster spot and a brief substitute appearance during the USMNT's Round of 16 loss to Belgium at the 2026 World Cup. How did he get into this position? Well, he didn’t come through a traditional MLS academy. He took the long road. Hailing from Fresno, California, he played for a local club called California Odyssey. As you can see, they are incredibly proud of their former player.
While with California Odyssey, he mostly played as a forward or an attacking winger, even leading the division in scoring. In addition, he played for his local high school team at San Joaquin Memorial High School, the same school that produced NBA big men Brook and Robin Lopez, alongside several other standout basketball and football players. As for soccer, Arfsten put up staggering numbers during his senior year, racking up 51 goals and 19 assists in just 26 starts. Even with those stats, he was overlooked by the U.S. Youth National Teams. With no professional teams on his radar at the time, he chose to play college soccer at UC Davis, where he was mainly deployed in the midfield.
Over his collegiate career, Arfsten generated 9 goals and 8 assists, culminating in being named the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2021. After his breakout, he left college early to join the San Jose Earthquakes II, the reserve team for the San Jose Earthquakes. During that year, Arfsten piled up 9 goals and 6 assists in MLS Next Pro, a division MLS implemented specifically to bridge the gap between youth academies and the first team.
Since he was signed directly to a reserve team, he technically remained eligible for the MLS SuperDraft. If you're wondering how that's possible since he had already signed a professional contract, MLS has a specific mechanism for this: if a collegiate player decides to leave school early and signs a contract in a domestic developmental league (including MLS Next Pro, USL, NISA, or the Canadian Premier League), they remain eligible for selection. The Columbus Crew took advantage of this rule, drafting him ahead of the 2023 season.
The Crew’s coach at the time, Wilfried Nancy, believed Arfsten would be better suited as a wingback rather than a traditional midfielder. Arfsten, who is comfortable with both feet, was deployed on both the right and left flanks. Nancy felt Arfsten fit his game model perfectly due to his 1v1 skills to bypass defenders, his high-intensity work rate to press up the field, and his speed to track back quickly. In the 2023 season, he scored a crucial playoff goal on the path to the Crew winning the MLS Cup. Over the next two seasons, he became a valuable piece for the Crew as their starting left wingback. His play quickly caught the eye of USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino, earning his first international call-up in January 2025 and establishing himself as a regular on the roster through the 2026 World Cup cycle.
His standout play for both club and country caught the attention of English Championship side Middlesbrough. They was actually interested in him last year and put in a bid at that time but the Crew rejected it. This time around, it looks like the offer is a go. Just like Wilfried Nancy before him, Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg believes Arfsten is an ideal fit for his style of play. Under Hellberg, Arfsten will be tasked with aggressively pressing opponents. When they have the ball, he will be expected to do what he does best, use his 1v1 skills to create chances and drive past defenders from the left flank.
Of course, his defending can at times be suspect, and he has been known to get caught out by tricky opposing wingers. That is an area of his game that will need to adapt quickly to in the Championship. With that being said, this should be a great match for both the player and the club. Plus, there is built-in chemistry waiting for him with former Crew teammate Aidan Morris and summer signing Sebastian Berhalter. We should know within the next day or two if this signing officially crosses the finish line.
